Umutara PolytechnicUmutara Polytechnic is located at Nyagatare in the district of Umutara. Nyagatare is a rapidly developing town in beautiful rolling countryside. It is well served educationally with 3 secondary schools and a fourth being built privately. Nearby is the Akagere River famous for being a source of the Nile and the Akagere Game reserve with hippopotamus, buffalo, giraffe and a myriad of birds. The Polytechnic was founded in 2004 by the community of Umutara province, now the northern half of the Eastern Province of Rwanda. Its vision is to contribute to sustainable development through the provision of well trained human resources using knowledge based tools. Its mission is to educate and enlighten its students and the community through research and imparting knowledge and diversified skills that are relevant to the development needs of the country. The Polytechnic was established in former technical school buildings and surrounding land on the southern edge of the town of Nyagatare – the Muvumba campus.
An administration and ICT Campus to the east of Nyagatare was added in 2005. It started its first academic year on 2nd May 2006 with 265 students and 16 staff organized in Faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Commerce and Applied Economics, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It was granted a Provisional Operating Licence on 12th December 2006.
