Dr. Usta Kaitesi (Principal, College of Arts and Humanities - CMHS).
Dr. James Gashumba, the former Rector of former Umutara Polytechnic, who is now the Coordinator of UR-Nyagatare Campus was the Chief Host.
The handover function was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 comprised of the main handover function between Dr. James Gashumba the outgoing Rector of UP and the three College Principal namely; Dr. Laetitia Nyinawamwiza, Dr. Papias Musafiri Malimba and Prof. Manasse Mbonye, respectively. The three College Principals were representing the Colleges that have academic programs at Nyagatare Campus that were merged with those previously conducted at former Umutara Polytechnic. The function took place in a cordial and collegial atmosphere, presided over by Dr. Innocent Mugisha who was representing the Hon. Minister of Education and Mr. Pudence Rubingisa Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance, UR. Other College Principles i.e. Prof. George Njoroge, Prof. Phillip Cotton and Dr. Usta Kaitesi also witnessed the function.
Phase two of the function entailed a general meeting of the visitors and the staff and students representatives of UR-Nyagatare Campus. Dr. James Gashumba welcomed the guests to the meeting and went ahead to introduce the various officials present. Dr. Laetitia Nyinawamwiza spoke on behalf of Principals; Mr. Pudence Rubingisa Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance spoke on behalf of UR top management whereas Dr. Innocent Mugisha spoke on behalf of the Hon. Minister of Education.
All the speakers emphasized the importance of team work in order to achieve the Vision and Mission of the University of Rwanda. They also urged the staff and students of Nyagatare Campus to emblace the positive change and play their role during the transition process and after.
The staff and students were informed that Dr. James Gashumba will remain serving at Nyagatare Campus, a statement which was highly welcomed by the audience.
The Principles of the Colleges which have Programs being conducted at Nyagatare Campus promised to regularly visit the campus and meet with staff and students from the respective Colleges to discuss various matters.
There was ample time for a Question –Answer Session where questions about employment/job security (or insecurity) were frankly discussed. The DVC/AF reassured members of staff that whereas any change must inevitably involve restructuring to bring about more efficient use of resources, there were no specific plans to just axe jobs for the sake of it.
The meeting ended at 5 pm.
