BACKGROUND


The Vet Faculty started in 2006 with 13 students
One degree Programme in Veterinary Medicine and one higher diploma.
Currently 111 students (Year 1-4) with additional degree programme in livestock production Technologies and Devpt (BLPTD).
Three (3) academic staff in 2006, 13 to-date.

 

 

MISSION STATEMENT
To provide training and research services in animal health and production , imparting skills and knowledge to students at the same time guiding the population to solve their problems related to livestock production.


VISION STATEMENT
A centre of excellence and innovation; producing gender balanced skilled personnel capable of meeting national, regional and global challenges in animal health, breeding, nutrition , husbandry and related biotechnology”. By 2020 FVM student enrollment will exceed 900 (Certificate – PhDs).

Educational Purpose
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is there to train students in Veterinary Medicine with the main objective of producing a pool of experts critically needed in the development of a healthy and productive national herd in terms of livestock, wild life and companion animals in Rwanda. The main idea is to produce functional graduates who will be of practical use to the immediate community of the Eastern Province and the nation at large. It will also serve as a springboard and catalyst to the implementation of government policy on advancing livestock development as a major contributor of Gross Domestic Product of the economy as espoused in the National Vision 2020 and Economic Poverty Reduction Strategy documents.

Learning Outcomes

Advanced Diploma of Higher Education in Animal Health and Production, Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine Honours Degrees.
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine shall award an Advanced Diploma of Higher Education in Animal Health and Production after 5 semesters (two and a half years). For the award of an Honours degree in Veterinary Medicine, a candidate must study for an additional two and half years following a successful completion of an Advanced Diploma. The degree program is therefore, a five year full time course. The course shall comprise of lectures, practical sessions, tutorials, internship and seminars. There will be field trips and a project to be written and submitted for examination.

Advanced Diploma of Higher Education.


The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine award a Advanced Diploma of Higher Education in Animal Health and Production after accumulation of minimum 300 credits over 5 semesters of study. All subjects offered are compulsory and must be passed for the award to be given.

Degree programme
For the award of a degree in veterinary medicine, a candidate must study for an additional two years following a successful completion of a Advanced diploma. The degree program is therefore, a five year full time course.

The courses comprise of lectures, practical sessions, clinical field visits, tutorials, internship and seminars. Students go on field trips regularly and also do at least two month of internship every year post year 3 of study.
